We are getting married at Fireseed Catering, which is in the south part of Whidbey Island, about 15 minutes from the Clinton ferry. Our Friday welcome gathering will be in Langley. Maps and reservation websites can be deceiving – the island is about 55 miles long and there are only a few access points to get there. One example: Whidbey Island and Camano Island are only 3 miles apart, but it will take you at least 90 minutes to get from one island to another. (Note: do not stay on Camano Island.) Also, we are getting married near Langley, Washington. Not Langley, British Columbia

Getting to Whidbey Island

Seattle Tacoma International Airport

Sea-Tac has by far the most flights, with several daily nonstop options from Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York and internationally. Sea-Tac is about 45-50 minutes from the Whidbey Island ferry line with no traffic (though it’s often longer with traffic). The least-expensive rental car options will be at Sea-Tac. There is also a reliable shuttle service from Sea-Tac to Whidbey Island. If you’re really into public transit, you could take the light rail to the Sounder train to the ferry, but that will likely take at least three hours.

Paine Field

Paine Field is in Everett and about 10 minutes from the Whidbey Island ferry line and has nonstops from Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco, and a few other West Coast cities. Avis has a car rental near the airport. This is a good option if you find a flight with a comparable price to Sea-Tac but want to avoid the longer drive.

Bellingham Airport

Bellingham is north of Whidbey Island and about 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. There are flights from Las Vegas, Oakland, San Diego and a few other cities seasonally. If you want to avoid ferry lines this could be a good option since you drive over Deception Pass and south through Whidbey Island, but it will still take about the same time it would take to wait in a ferry.

Note: There are no rideshare (Uber, Lyft) options on Whidbey Island

Things to do on Whidbey

There's so much to explore on Whidbey Island during your stay. Here are a few of our favorite things to do when visiting the island.

How do I get to Whidbey Island?

The best way to get to Whidbey Island is to take the ferry from Mukilteo (called the Mukilteo-Clinton route). You drive directly onto the ferry, which is an experience on its own. The ferry route is about 20 minutes – just enough time to get out of your car, enjoy the sea breeze and try to spot a whale. There are two boats, which run about every 30 minutes, and they don’t take reservations. Lines can be extremely long, we’ve been in line for up to two hours in peak traffic. June 1 shouldn’t be the busiest, but give yourself a lot of time if you’re making plans on- or off-island. We recommend getting in line three hours before the ceremony.

Washingtonians take their ferry lines very seriously and will not tolerate any sort of line-cutting, even if it’s by accident. Do NOT try to fight or bribe anyone in line, even if and especially if your name is Carl Cornwell.
